The Upgrade
In close cooperation with care givers, parents and the community, Matchbox developed a suitable upgrade concept for Likhona Ithemba: a converted container with a kitchen and toilet was installed on site and painted with the help of friends and neighbors.
The new facility will be completed early 2015 and handed over to Vinolia and her team of care givers.
Likhona Ithemba
Vinolia Thom used to run a Bar at her home, in the heart of Mfuleni. After many years of business she dreamed of a better place for the children from her community. Soon she closed the Bar and opened her doors to provide daycare to approximately 50 children in her own shack.
In 2013 she used the opportunity to extend her center on a second site in close proximity to her home. She managed to set up three more classrooms of each about 15 sqm, built from corrugated iron, for 40 more children. Those kids are well looked after and learn important life skills. However, the basic requirements of a kitchen and toilets on site are not covered.
