SIMTHEMBILE ‘SIM’ GQUSHUZA
Throughout his childhood in Umtata in the Eastern Cape of in South Africa, Sim was inspired by his late grandmother who passionately weaved, painted, sculptured and created pottery. After studying ‚Art and Craft Production‘, he gained much experience in the production of ceramics until he joined the Spier Arts Academy in Cape Town and graduated as a mosaic artist in 2014. In collaboration with other professional artists emerging from the Spier Arts Academy, Sim creates large scale mosaic works, as well as his own pieces.
ZAMIKAVA ‘KHAYA‘ PEHANA
Born at in the Eastern Cape in 1984, Khaya was inspired by his social, natural and built environment and he explored a variety of media to express his personal style. Drawn to the craft of mosaics, Khaya also studied at the Spier Art Academy in Cape Town, alongside Sim, where he graduated in 2016 and continues to share studio space with Sim since.
Sim and Khaya created 20 mosaic pieces as their JAHRESGABE edition, expressing the characteristic scenery of the coastal roads surrounding Cape Town, that are carved into the sloping landscapes. Along those natural edges the distinctive red soil, the clear blue sky and the vividly green vegetation meet. These mosaic boards are ca. 20 × 30 cm in size and weigh around 1,5 kg.
